In collaboration with British Embassy Seoul, the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea, BAE Systems, the Korea British Society, historian Andrew Salmon MBE and the authorities in Paju, which administers the site, The British Korean War Memorial Committee (BKWMC) will establish a permanent addition, in the form of educational signage, to the existing memorial that explains via compelling text and dramatic images (in both Korean and English), the UK’s contributions to the Korean War associated with the Battle of Imjin River. The information boards will improve visitor awareness and understanding, and improve the site’s visitor experience.
The original Battle of Imjin River Memorial was built by UK soldiers in 1957. In 2014 the site was expanded by the Paju authority. The Memorial site commemorates the UK Armed Forces' involvement in the Korea War at Hill 235, known as the Battle of Imjin River. The 2014 memorial is symbolised by the ‘Glorious Glosters’ Beret, marking the principle regiment involved in the battle. The Memorials are managed and funded by the Paju authority. The site forms a key component of much of the UK’s Remembrance/Commemoration annual programme of events; however, as the number of UK Korean War Veterans declines, work to support long term remembrance and education is deemed a fitting next step. Furthermore, this work aligns with wider UK-ROK collaboration efforts in support of marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
